Layering Everyday Dresses For Winter
Layering Everyday Dresses For Winter
The colder months have well and truly arrived. Many of us have already packed away our summer dresses and skirts and while it’s true that the idea of going bare-legged seems almost unbearable over Autumn / Winter – there are plenty of ways to work more feminine pieces into your winter wardrobe.
The key here is layering – using your favourite everyday dress as a base from which you can then add tights, jackets, jumpers and scarves until you’re well and truly protected from the elements!
Done right and the finished look is stylish and sophisticated – making a welcome change from jeans and sweatshirts in the colder seasons.
Layering Everyday Dresses For Winter – The Dress
Choosing the right dress is key to making the layered look work. Keep the style and pattern simple – opting for lightweight fabrics that won’t bunch or gather, even if you’re adding fitted pieces on top.
There are quite a few dresses from Tu which fit the bill and won’t break the back either! Just like the classic monochrome shift dress below which features a black leather neckline to add some extra detail!

Layering Everyday Dresses For Winter – Jumpers and Cardigans
The shape and style of your jumper all depends on the dress underneath. Smart, fitted jumpers always look great with skirts that feature a slight flare or frill at the hem, balancing the whole outfit nicely.
Above, you can see the lovely black cardigan which will layer over the dress perfectly. It’s casual, open at the front to show off the leather neckline without scrimping on warmth or above all, comfort!
It’s a lightweight knit too so this can easily be layered underneath a coat on days when you’re really feeling the chill.
Layering Everyday Dresses For Winter – Coats and Jackets
Coats are where you can either add a pop of colour or choose to keep the outfit entirely monochrome.
How lovely is the lime coat featured above, I was instantly drawn to this as it offers something a little bit different and is unlike anything else in my wardrobe!
It’s a very classic, sophisticated style but the colour is what really helps to keep the outfit exciting and fun!
You could also add a simple faux leather or denim jacket to the mix or equally play the whole outfit down with a sophisticated long line black coat – perfect for making an everyday dress look office-ready during the winter months.
Layering Everyday Dresses For Winter – Shoes and Boots
If you’re anything like me, then you’ll want to keep your feet as warm and as cosy as possible! Thick, black tights are a must during winter and for when the weather gets really cold, you can easily layer a pair of socks, worn under boots so no one can tell.
This is the reason why I’ve opted for the pair of classic black ankle boots which you can see in the collage above. Not only will they keep your feet warm and toasty but the slightly taller fit makes them a perfect choice – especially if you’re hoping to conceal last year’s novelty Christmas socks underneath.
The heel is flared slightly which is not only pretty but it also makes the boots easier to walk in during the day too – you can of course opt for the flatter version if you wish.
As I always say, there are no rules! As long as you have fun mixing colours, textures and patterns to create a look that’s eye-catchingly stylish, warm and comfortable then nothing else matters!
Enjoy! 🙂

Thanks for sharing! I have just a simple grey dress hanging in my closet and I struggled to style it since it got this cold. Now I know pretty much how I’m gonna layer it up :).
