Creating The Kitchen Of Your Dreams: The Hottest Trends For 2018

Written By: The Sprinkles of Style Team

For many of us, the kitchen is the most important room in the house.

Modern kitchens are rarely just a place to cook and eat - today, we tend to use the kitchen as a meeting point to catch up with loved ones, talk about the day and hang out together.

If you’ve moved house and you’re in the process of redecorating, or you’re keen to update a dull kitchen then you’ve come to the right place. Here are some of the hottest kitchen trends to embrace in 2018.

Swap Open Plan For Broken Plan

Open plan kitchens are ideal for families as they create spacious, versatile areas however, there's a new trend called 'broken plan' which offers a middle ground between open plan and separated rooms. It's something which is likely to be attractive to everyone as it offers you the ability to section off different parts of the room, creating a lovely vibe in your home.

You can do this by using screens, furniture and features like freestanding shelving units or even adding glass walls to the space. The beauty of this approach is being able to use different parts of the kitchen for different purposes.

From cooking to working and socialising to entertaining, you can do everything at the same time without worrying.

Even though you’re breaking up the kitchen, you still want it to feel open, bright and airy so choose low level furniture and shelving units which will maximise the space - giving the room a taller feel.

All you need to do is think outside the box and get creative - always allowing natural light into your home too.

Introducing Colour

White kitchens have been all the rage for the past few years, especially with marble worktops however this spring/ summer, we're going to be seeing a lot more colour making a comeback.

Not bright colour but pastel accents which will add a cool retro-style to small kitchens - for larger kitchens, you can have fun with two-tone units to create a fun space. (If that's your thing)

You can add as much or as little colour as you like - you could still keep your kitchen white and add pastel accessories which looks beautiful nonetheless.

On the other hand, you could go crazy and paint the walls or choose a bright wallpaper - it's all about having fun and getting creative.

Teal / Green are ideal for bolder designs while duck egg blue and grey are perfect for stylish, understated rooms.

Try and avoid dark colours if you’ve got a compact kitchen but remember that you can create the illusion of a larger space using mirrors on the wall or placing them strategically around the room such as behind cabinets with side-lights to reflect as much light around the room think about kitchen plinth lights and light flooring too which adds a luxury feel.

If you’ve got a big kitchen  then think about adding complementary accessories, such as storage jars, vases, plant pots and coloured pans they always work a treat!

Unique Patterns and Tiles

Pinterest has experienced a dramatic increase (over 120%) in the number of searches for Moroccan-style interiors.

There's been a huge rise in tiles and prints which are making an appearance in glossy magazines and Instagram snaps all around the world.

If you’re someone who loves prints and colourful tiles, then you could also think about adding interest to your kitchen with this lovely trend which can easily be created.

Instead of choosing colour on the walls or a bold wallpaper - keep your kitchen relatively simple and pick out your favourite tiling, some can be clashing - it all depends to on your personal style and the type of design which you want to create in your home.

You can add little accents like placing mirrors around the room (to reflect the light and colour) but you can also add accessories such as pans, vases and storage jars but to compliment the tiling - look at standing lanterns and gold vases which will add a vintage-luxury touch to the space.

It's all about having fun, getting creative and making sure your home is somewhere you feel happy, at ease and comfortable - it's your little haven.

The kitchen is the most important room in the house for most of us, and it pays to focus on the details and consider your options before you dust down your painting overalls or order tiles.

Plan your makeover in advance, look around for inspiration, and think carefully about how you plan to use the space but always make sure the design and style suits you.
