Travel Guide: Kythnos

Kythnos is Greek Island in the Western Cyclades - located between Kea and Serifos.

Not too far from the mainland of Greece - it's 56 nautical miles from the harbour of Piraeus and 25 nautical miles from Lavrio.

Hey everyone!

I hope you're all well and having a great week! Things are super-busy at the moment which is extremely fun but as you can see, I'm slightly behind on my blogging schedule.

Seeing as it's now summer, it's only right that I start sharing more travel posts on here (there is a travel section after all) and the very first travel guide is here!

I have LOTS of posts like this coming your way so I won't keep you any longer - keep scrolling for more...

Travel Guide - About Kythnos

If you're looking for a relaxing getaway to really switch-off from everything then Kythnos is the place for you.

Kythnos is a small Greek Island which is located in the Western Cyclades - between Kea and Serifos.

It's not too far from mainland Greece. I travelled to the island from the harbour of Lavrio which went there directly with no-stops, cutting the travel time.

(Check out Blue Star Ferries & FastFerries)

You can also travel to the island from other harbours such as Piraeus but check the routes beforehand as some tend to stop at 'Kea' before Kythnos.

Even though it's a small island, it has more than 70 beaches - many of which are still inaccessible by car however there are water-taxi's which will take you to different points on the island.

One of the most notable (and unique) beaches on Kythnos is called 'Kolona' - pictured on the left.

Travel Guide - Kythnos (Merichas & Dryopida)

Even though Kythnos is a relatively quiet island, there's a number of places which you can visit.

Places are very picturesque but different in architectural styles and unique in their own way.

The town of Merichas (top photo) is one of the first places that you'll come by when arriving on the island.

This is where ships arrive and leave from and this is where you're going to see some of the most incredible sunsets!

Dryopida (second photo) is completely different to Merichas - it's a smaller village which has a rustic feel.

To visit the centre, you'll have to park your car and go by foot - here you'll be able to visit a little museum which contains ancient artefacts that were found and have since been kept and looked after.

There are also caves which tourists can visit on certain days - just ask the locals what days the caves are open are more often than not, someone will be on hand to show you around.

Travel Guide - Kythnos (Loutra)

On the North East end of the island, you'll find the village of Loutra - this is where I stayed during my time on the island.

(I had a car and drove around the island, visiting different places.)

Loutra is famous for it's thermal springs which are said to have curative properties.

Opposite to where I stayed, right on the corner of the beach there was a thermal spring however the water was extremely shallow - you had to lay almost flat for the water to cover you.

Don't worry though - there is a large tourist hotel opposite the outdoor thermal spring, with a bathhouse which is functioning for visitors to go and soak in the marble tubs.

For those of you who might not know, thermal spring water is extremely warm - almost hot but it's such a lovely experience and something that I recommend checking out.

Travel Guide - Kythnos (Kanala)

A growing coastal village on the island is 'Kanala' - this is on the East of the island and one of the longer drives (20+ minutes) from Loutra.

Here you're going to come across some of the most beautiful beaches on the island! 🙂

The sand is almost white with crystal blue waters which turn a deep sapphire shade in the distance.

This is where I took my photos for a bikini feature and the best part was that the beach I visited was rather peaceful - just a few people here and there.

There are vacation houses in the area with a local cafe and taverna so you can enjoy your cold coffee whilst relaxing on the beach before grabbing some lunch.

🙂

Travel Guide - Kythnos (Where To Stay)

During my visit to Kythnos, I stayed in a lovely place called Porto Klaras Kythnos.

Upon arrival, all my bags and luggage were unloaded from the car and taken to the apartment which I was staying in.

The location is really lovely - everything you need is nearby and perfect if you're on a relaxing holiday.

It's not even a 2 minute walk to the local shops, cafe's, restaurant's and one of the beaches - including the thermal spring.

Take a 5 minute walk and you're on the other side, this is where you'll find another beautiful beach to relax on.

The apartment I was staying in was really lovely - clean, airy and bright along with a lovely view of village!

This is where I took photos for another outfit post... 🙂
