The Basics About Eyeshadow
The Basics About Eyeshadow
My beauty blog has primarily been a place to share beauty products reviews, product launches, fashion trends and news so I thought I would start doing something different and share beauty advice, tips, tricks and the basics of makeup and beauty products.
Many people who follow and rad my blog will know that I’m not just a beauty junkie or makeup lover at heart…I also work within the beauty industry as a makeup artist. This means I get to create lovely looks and use fabulous makeup products.
For me things may seem simple but to other people the world of make-up is such an overwhelming place…what colour to pick, what shade to pick…it’s sometimes too much with everything available so in this post I’ll start with the basics of eyeshadow!
[pullquote width=”300″ float=”left”]The eyes are the window to the soul, I prefer focusing on my eye makeup than applying a little bit of lipstick![/pullquote]
For me personally, I absolutely love eyeshadow….it’s a must-have and I use it everyday on myself it makes me look and feel better.
The eyes are said to be the windows to the soul and this is what people tend to notice about you first so I prefer focusing on my eye make-up than applying a little bit of lipstick/gloss.
What eyeshadows to pick as a beginner?
If you’re new to the world of make-up and are slowly growing your makeup collection I would stick to neutral shades.
Think creams, beige, peach, champagnes and deep browns – these colours work on all skin tones and you can really create beautiful looks.
Cream Shades – Keep the cream shades matte. They can be used as a ‘base’ colour all over the eyelid to prep, brighten and allow your next colour to look better.
Champagne, Peach & Beige Shades – These shades I’d recommend you pick shimmer. Shimmer’s look beautiful all over the eyelid, they brighten, reflect light and bring a sparkle to your eyes.
Brown Shades – Again I would stick to shimmer. Brown works beautifully in the crease and outer corner of the eye as it defines and brings your look together. By defining the eye area you’ll instantly look healthier and the focus will be on your eyes.
As I’ve mentioned above this is a short post and acts as a ‘beginners guide to eyeshadow’ and I hope that some of you will find it useful!
I’ll be doing some step-by-step guides for different looks and I think I’ll start with a ‘simple smoky eye’ as I know it’s a look many people like and want to see.

I totally agree with the power of eye make up! I would love to see an eyeshadow tutorial/guide from you!
Hey Diana, thank you for your lovely comment! I love the power of eye makeup….it’s so much better than lipstick but lipstick is good when you’re in a rush and want to look presentable 🙂
I will be doing a guide/tutorial in the next couple of weeks…probably starting with a subtle smoky eye, how does that sound? 🙂 xx
this is very informative I like the idea of using a base colour before eyeshadow x
Hi Gail, thank you so much for your comment! It’s wonderful to use a base eyeshadow as this brightens and lifts the eye area plus it creates a wonderful blank canvas for your next colour, makes colour stand out more and lasts longer! 🙂 x
I love dark browns with a shimmer they really do make eyes look nice x
I also love a dark brown shade with a shimmer, it’s a beautiful colour that suits all skin tones and colours and just brings a sparkle to your eyes! 🙂 xx
These colours look beautiful 🙂
Thanks Stacey! The colours are really nice yes!!! 🙂 xxx
Your advice is really good I didnt know that matte colours can be used as a base for eyes.
Does that mean it just evens out the skintone?
Hey Polly, thank you so much!! Yes matte colours are perfect as a base all over the eyelid, it evens out the skin tone, makes the area look brighter, wider and creates a lovely base for your next colour. 🙂 xx
